Tire load index chart

The load index is the number before the speed rating, and it sets the maximum weight each tire can carry at the right pressure. Type it to see the load in pounds and kilograms, per tire and per axle.

    How to use it

    1. Find the service description on the sidewall, after the size. In 225/65R17 102H, the load index is 102.
    2. Type the number, or a full LT code like 121/118S.
    3. Read the load per tire and per axle, in lb and kg.
    4. Compare it with the original tire on your door placard: the new tire should be equal or higher.

The load applies to one tire at the pressure the tire standard sets for it. Multiply by two for an axle and compare with the axle ratings (GAWR) on the certification label in the driver's door jamb: two tires with load index 102 carry up to 3,748 lb (1,700 kg) on one axle.

    XL, Reinforced and P-metric tires

XL (extra load) and Reinforced tires have a higher load index than a standard tire of the same size, but they reach it only at a higher inflation pressure. If the original tire is XL, the replacement should be XL too, inflated as the vehicle placard or the tire maker says.

P-metric tires such as P225/65R17, when fitted to a light truck, SUV or van, are derated: divide the listed load by 1.10. A P-metric tire with index 91 then counts for about 1,233 lb (559 kg) instead of 1,356 lb (615 kg).

LT tires often show two load indexes, like 121/118S: the first is for a single tire, the second for each tire on a dual rear axle. Ply rating describes strength, not an actual count of layers, and the pressure in the table is the usual maximum for each range: the exact figure is molded on the sidewall. Run LT tires at the pressure the vehicle or tire maker recommends for your load, not automatically at the maximum.

Do not fit a tire with a lower load index than the original. An overloaded tire runs hotter and can fail, especially when towing or fully loaded. Check the owner's manual and a tire professional if in doubt.

    Questions

What does load index 91 mean?

Up to 1,356 lb (615 kg) per tire at the specified pressure, or 2,712 lb (1,230 kg) for two tires on one axle.

Can I use a higher load index than the original?

Yes, a higher index is generally accepted. It may ride a little firmer, and XL tires need more pressure to carry their full rating.

Is load index the same as load range?

No. The load index is a number tied to a weight. The load range (C, D, E) is a letter on LT tires that gives the construction strength and maximum pressure. LT tires show both.

Where do I find the load my vehicle needs?

On the certification label in the driver's door jamb, which lists the front and rear axle ratings, and on the tire placard and in the owner's manual.
